Today’s Joke of the Day

November 29, 2011

Why does Santa Claus like to work in the garden?

Answer is….

Because he likes to, “Ho, ho, ho!”

We are taking those tests and the days are going by this week.  Today’s photo is of our current Star Student, even though her week has been extended for a few extra days!

Thanks for sticking with me and these blog things.  Soon I will get back to some creative writing with my posts!

From way back on Day 18…..

Here is our Student of the Week.  She made root beer floats with her mom.  They were delicious.  The estimation bag was a collection of those little things electricians use to put wires together, twisting the cap onto loose wires.  This teacher will need to learn the technical term for those things!

Day 17

Monday, September 19, 2011

Star Student cutting up Snickers for snickerdoodle salad.

Here we are in full swing with Star Students.  The Star Student is a week long event for the students, one at a time of course!  They get little presents each day on their desk.  They put together a bulletin board complete with a poster to fill out and then they may add photos around their poster.  They bring in a favorite picture book to share with the class.  They also bring in a collection of items used as an estimation problem for the entire class to have some fun with.  Parents arrange to come in and share a recipe with the class, hopefully a favorite of the Star Student.  We taste test them and then when the recipes are assembled into a class cookbook in the spring we have all of the recipes in one place!  I just about forgot!  The Star Student doesn’t have to take the spelling test on Friday of their week!  It is a great way to celebrate everyone!

Day 14

Wednesday, September 14, 2011

They love the silly photos so much more!

Chapel today was about heroes….who is your hero?  Many of the students in my class would say “Jesus” or “God” or “Mom/Dad” what wonderful testaments to how their parents have raised them!  They can come up with these wonderful words of inspiration only hours after arguing with their best friend on the playground!  They move on, they live in the present.  The argument ends when recess ends and they can instantly reply “Jesus” because they know they are forgiven through His death on the cross.  If only I could clear my thoughts as quickly when I am angered.  If only I could proclaim “Jesus” is my hero as quickly as they do!  When Jesus told his disciples about the faith of a child, He was most certainly true.

Day 12

Monday, September 12, 2011

Look at those cute kids!

Look at that gorgeous bunch!

Today we worked on so many things and yet we didn’t complete everything I had planned for the day.  I sure do hope the math problem solving gets done well as homework!

I am thinking of ideas for our classroom donation to the Annual School Fall Auction.  I hope the one I have cooked inside my head makes sense….stay tuned for those ideas!

Day 10

Friday, September 9, 2011

Look! I have students who read at recess time!

Before I really get going for today, I have to show you a picture of a student who was reading at recess time.  This was just one out of four who wanted to read during this morning’s recess.  I love them!  Thank you God for sending these students my way!

The students also helped me with some school dinner auction work today.  Some were helping with the stapling of 250 letters and donation forms to be sent home with our family messengers in the school building.  Others in my class offered to take these papers to the various teachers around our school building.  Thank you God for these students of mine!

The Student of the Day took our class mascot to lunch today.  It was funny thinking that Frank the Hot Dog would enjoy munching on mini-corn dogs for lunch today.  Thank you God for the sense of humor in my students!

Day 9

Wednesday, September 7, 2011

Look at these readers!

On the ninth day of school my teacher gave to me….nine wooden rulers, eight school boxes, seven spiral notebooks, six pairs of scissors, five gold stars, four glue sticks, three color crayons, two new pencils and a book of the ABC’s.

That is a part of a soon to be competed Twelve Days of School book we are working on in the classroom.  Sing along, as they are lyrics to a familiar song!

I have my Green Bay Packer outfit planned for tomorrow.  It will be fun to see all of the Green and Gold!  Which reminds me, I haven’t taken my customary first day of school whole class picture in the classroom.  I think I will need to do that tomorrow for sure.  They will look cute wearing Packer stuff.  A cutie pie in my class told me the story of how her mom would probably be getting her a new Packer shirt since she has had to wear her brother’s in the past and they often fight about it.  I love their honesty!

Honesty is one of the characteristics we learned about in our Social Studies book today.  It was a part of six parts of a lesson on Citizenship.  Let’s see if I can remember them all….respect, responsibility, courage, honesty, and I cannot remember the other two!  I will need to review my notes and get back to you on that one.

Today we had a great chapel service led by former Our Redeemer teacher, Mr. Tuler.  The kids really enjoyed his movie references and how he defined what a good movie has…. Good prevails.  Bad things happen to good people.  That is what our lives are like as Christians.  Bad things happen to us but we know good prevails because of our home in heaven.  Mr. Tuler’s lesson really hit home for a few of my students.  I love teaching at our school for these very things!

Day 8

Tuesday, September 6, 2011

Dry erase board work.

Yes, our first dress up day of the year is Thursday….Green Bay Packer Wear Day!

Monday, September 5, 2011

Look at all of that static electricity in EB’s hair!

Thursday was a few days ago.  I forgot to write something up.  Here is a few quick sentences for you.  I hope all of the parents received my weekly email on Thursday.  Everyone in the class completed their Memory Work for the week.  It was great to see a few kids coach others in the class through the Memory Work.  We have had some great days this week!  Wonderful moments included:

·        Can we have more Read-to-Self time this afternoon?

·        I think ___would like to read this book, may I share it?

·        We know how to use rulers.

·        We learned contractions in first grade.

·        May I help her with her Memory Work?

Next week will bring some more bright moments, I can just feel it!

Day 6

Wednesday, August 31, 2011

I love it when they read in their book nooks!

Today’s best quote, “Mrs. Kegley, can we have Read-to-Self time again this afternoon?”  and that was after 20 minutes of a great Read-to-Self session!  Those are heavenly words to hear.

Many students completed at least one Memory Verse so far this week.  There are many who need to give me one more verse and a couple students who have to do two of them.

Job Applications can be completed and returned to me up to next Thursday.  The classroom jobs up for employment are:  Materials Manager, Altar Guild,  Personnel File, Grounds Crew, Computer Guru and Librarian.  The applications are to make them understand the importance of taking your work seriously.  Some students love this system and others care very little about holding down a classroom job.  The jobs are theirs for as long as they want them.  It works out pretty smooth.

Day 5

Wednesday, August 31, 2011

Blowing those balance balls up!

This is a day later than the actual “Day 5” but I thought you’d understand if I put a picture of some cute kids in the classroom!  We have a few balance balls in the classroom.  The official routine is the Student of the Day gets to use one on their day and the day after.  The kids are surprised that I even have this red ball to sit on.  In the event parents need validation, I did give my students permission to bring in their own balance ball to use in place of their chair.  It is a family choice to do this, no one is expected to go out and buy a balance ball since we rotate the balance balls through the classroom.

Day 4

Monday, August 29, 2011

The yellow desk group!

Our Student of the Day was EF.  I think the kiddos are beginning to figure out my “super secret” code for the order of the Student of the Day!

We tried our hand at highlighting the school year theme in our brand new Bibles!   Romans 12:4-5 is the theme of the year and as with any memory verse, the students are instructed in the highlighting of these scripture passes in their Bibles.  Most guessed the New Testament was the section of the Bible to find the book of Romans.  We also began our first Religion book, Beginnings!

Reading time was devoted to reviewing “I PICK a book,”  and then we worked in some lesson time on Read-to-Self instruction.  We thought out some rules, so far;  Work quietly when you read-to-self.  Be independent with your reading.  And finally, stay in one place when you read-to-self.

Monday we have two special classes.  PE is in the morning and computer time is in the afternoon.

We started Unit 1 in our Spelling book.  There are five simple words we get weekly.  These five words are like a diving board into the  pool of spelling we have ahead of us this year!

Day 3

Saturday, August 27, 2011

A favorite photo of mine!

Sometimes I just don’t find enough time in one day to fill you in on the day’s happenings at school.  There are times like today, when I fill you a day later but no where near a dollar short!  Haha, a familiar phrase from my parents, “A day late and a dollar short.”

I remembered to take this picture today.  It is a favorite because I will take the same picture, hope they find themselves and stand in the same places, at the end of the year.  They grow so much in second grade and I am looking forward to growing along with them.

Friday is Spanish with Mrs. Maldonado.  I try to get a parent letter out to everyone on Friday.  I have had to send it out as a Friday night email.  Please look for that in your email box next week and every week.

Today’s wonderful moment came about when many students wanted time to read.  What a wonderful testament to their first grade year and the support their families gave them in reading.  We have Book Nooks to read in now, these are place scattered around the classroom where we can head to those places, no arguing, and get to work.

We made Sunflower glyphs.  A glyph has questions and the answers slightly vary.  The variations allow for a variations then in a project.  The questions focused on:  Do you have a pet or pets? Answer involved the “head” of the sunflower.  How many siblings do you have?  The answer was the number of leaves on your sunflower.  How old are you?  Answer was the number of petals around the flower.  Which month is your birthday in?  Finally, this was the number of seeds you were supposed to draw on the flower head.  They should be pretty cute.  Most children needed more time, so they will get time right away Monday morning to complete these.

Talk to you soon!

Day 2

Thursday, August 25, 2011

The first Student of the Day.......

Today we tried more school work.  It was great to actually teach a little something rather than just talk at the students.  There are so many routines in second grade, it is unbelievable what we do.

Student of the Day is one of those things.  This person changes each day, yes there is a pattern to the rotation (each year I wait to see who mentions they know it.  This Student of the Day job takes care of Math Meeting, is line leader, washes our two class tables after we eat lunch and anything else Mrs. Kegley may have them do in the school day.  Today’s picture is of the blue desk group and one of those children happened to be the Student of the Day today.

We loaded up our BEE Binders with all kinds of things.  The children were supposed to go home and show it all to their parents.  There was a sheet explaining the BEE BInder, Memory Verses for the next month, our classroom Honor Code (classroom rules), an explanation of how much more reading a child does if they read 20 minutes each night instead of 4 minutes, a “Reading Log” to record the completion of 20 minutes of reading, Star Student of the WEEK information, assignment of Star Student Weeks, a recipe sheet to complete and then given to Mrs. Kegley when they teach our class a little something about a favorite food or snack, and lastly, a handout touching upon the individual, desk group and whole class methods of rewards system or BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION PLANS.

We covered the I PICK system to choosing a book.  It has a special meaning.

I is for I choose a book.

P is for Purpose, why do I want to read it?

I is for Interest, does this book interest me?

C is for Comprehend, am I understanding what I am reading?

K is for Know, I know most of the words.

Thursday is PE in the morning and Music in the afternoon for our class.

Talk to tomorrow!

Day 1

Wednesday, August 24, 2011

Which sausage did I get as our classroom mascot?

Wow, the day flew by and I didn’t get my usual first day photo of the class on the playground.

You will have to just deal with the Sausage guys from Miller Park!  I actually bought one of these guys as our Official Classroom Mascot.  Did you guess which one I purchased?  I will let you know on another day.

Today was a warm day and we were thankful for the air conditioning was pleasant to return to after recess!  Everyone did a great job with the many directions given today.  There was our BEE Binder (BRING EVERYTHING EVERYDAY), organizing desks, getting to know Kegleyland classroom routines (like bathroom passes), when we have snack, where we sit in the cafeteria and so many more!

Pastor Schroeder started our day with an excellent chapel.  We are like the many tools in a toolbox, we need each other to get the job done.  Mrs. Seefeld taught us the new school year theme song.  Our school year theme is, “All for ONE, one for all.”  Talk to you soon!

Having fun with the clickers.

Has it really been that long since I have posted?  Well, I am here to tell you the days are zooming right by for me AND for the students in my class.  You see, I hear some of them comment under their breath at the day’s end, “It’s already time to go home?”  That makes me smile.

The students really smiled when we had our first chance to work the new school-wide “Clickers” or responders.  They can be configured wirelessly to our classroom computer.  They can be used simultaneously with our Promethean Board and the students can answer questions with these remote-like devices.  I can see tests in an entirely different way in the near future……..

Grandparent’s Day and the Annual School Dinner Auction are both next week.  We are certainly busy! God truly blesses us each and every day.

Until next time…….

Day 25………Thursday, September 29, 2011

Today was another day with an inside recess.  The daily rain has given us three inside recesses just this week.  When the students are inside they are in Kegleyland or Miss Young’s classroom, all 29 of them, for a recess.  Those special games and toys come out at these inside recess times.  When we have recess in Kegleyland, an interactive game goes up on the Promethean Board and children can play with that.  Snowline from Mini-clips.com is usually a safe choice.  Legos and Don’t Break the Ice were played with.  This class is enjoying puppet shows during inside recess.  Dry erase marker boards are always fun, too.  Hope your week is going well!

From the vault...Day 25

From Day 20… Thursday, September 22, 2012

We are doing Saxon Math 3 this year.  I was worried we wouldn’t get enough days like this one pictured today for you.  I was worried my second grade students would miss out on just playing with these pattern blocks during math time.  We did have a day with pattern blocks (I know I can plan these any time I want, I appreciate when these days are what can help me teach a math lesson).  The students came up with some great little pictures of pattern block creations.  I will put a collection of all of the students’ creations on another part of this blog.  Look for it for your favorite student in my class!

Going Batty

November 15, 2011

Batty

This Fun Friday project was inspired by HM's batty shirt a few weeks ago!

Today we began the IOWA Achievement testing and it was a good day.  Today’s photo was leftover from last week when I planned a Fun Friday project just for fun on Wednesday.  It is always good to use our creative side after the stress of the tests.  Never fear!  We did have PE this morning and computer time this afternoon.  Everyone is doing well, no tears!  Let’s pray the rest of the week goes smoothly and we can get these test done!

It has been another three day week and this next week is the annual IOWA achievement test week for second grade!  Good sleep and sharpened pencils are very important for these next five school days.

I had been keeping this blog a bit of a secret.  With the closing of the other one I work on in the next few months, I need to get this one up and running.  I have been having trouble logging in and updating at the “old” site, which has been frustrating for me.  Look for my usual pictures and musings!

Kegleyland Part Two

November 2, 2011

Hello!  If you have found me here that is a good thing!  The one I had started, well, I cannot log in!  Even with the password that I wrote down.  I love my Mac products but I knew the end to iWeb was coming and now is a great time to switch over.  I have had problems logging in and I have needed to find the right place to securely post things about my class without a cost to me.  So I am here and I hope things can work out.

The Racing Sausage samples are heating up!

Sausages are cooking up for the taste test!
